what we do

what we doThe Active Learning Centre was established in 1993 to teach, research and campaign in support of democracy, civil organisation and human rights.

We work with parliamentarians, councillors and election candidates across the world to encourage better representation and more effective democracy.

Democracy is maintained by community organisation and expression and over the years we have worked with hundreds of organisations to provide an active voice for vulnerable groups.

No matter how poor people are, rights and opportunities can improve lives. We have trained hundreds of volunteers to give rights education in Africa, China and the Middle East.

Women’s rights are our priority. As Hillary Clinton said at the UN in New York, ahead of the 2014 International Women’s Day, “When women and girls thrive, entire societies thrive. Just as women’s rights are human rights, women’s progress is human progress.
