ALC and WOLREC will train 33 democracy trainers who will in turn deliver local training courses for elected members in their respective councils. The project will also run a series of regional roundtables for elected councillors where they will have the opportunity to discuss the challenges facing local government in Malawi, and share solutions. The first series of the roundtables will be held in January 2015.
At the first Training of Trainers workshop held in Lilongwe in October 2014, the team of democracy trainers received training in adult learning skills, presentations in local government finance and local development planning from ministry officials and a workshop on gender delivered by UN Women Malawi.
The 2-year project is funded by the Royal Norwegian Embassy (Malawi), and is delivered in partnership with the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development and in association with the Malawi Association of Local Government (MALGA).
MALGA and the Ministry of Local Government has just published a comprehensive handbook for councillors. This invaluable guide to local government in Malawi is available here as a PDF. [1.6MB]
