Rights And Democracy Active Learning Centre (ALC) has acted as consultant on a number of projects within this broad area of work, most recently in Zambia. Using a cascade training model, Centre staff trained trainers who reached a total audience of 11,500. In addition to acting as consultants for the project and carrying out the training for the core trainers, staff wrote two training manuals for use by local trainers in the provinces. Other similar projects have taken place in Ghana, Tanzania, Kenya and Ethiopia. Consultancy in Turkey has focused on womens rights, the NGO shadow report on CEDAW and public information campaigns on the issue of honour killings.

Political Participation Research suggests that increased participation by women in the political process leads to less corrupt government. Working as consultants for the British Council, the Centre has mounted training and devised projects to encourage womens political participation and increased representation. Training for those who have been elected is vital to overcoming discrimination and helping women to play a full role in parliamentary processes. This work has been carried out in a number of different countries including: Romania, Ethiopia, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Tanzania, Uganda, Namibia, Mauritius and Poland.

Governance And Capacity Building For NGOs Current development discourse focuses on the role that civil society can play in strengthening democracy: if civil society is alive and well and reflecting the views and interests of its many diverse groups, it provides checks on government. However, in many developing and transition countries, civil society is itself fragile. Work has centred around capacity building in governance, strategic management, monitoring and evaluation and advocacy and lobbying most recently in Syria, Ethiopia, Pakistan, and in Hungary, Slovakia and Romania. In Zambia ALC has worked with the Anti-Corruption Commission to train trainers and produce a manual on anti-corruption work in the community.

Equality, Diversity And Gender Mainstreaming Consultancy and training in this area has included work with countries such as Hungary and Slovakia, prior to their accession to Europe, to examine European legislative standards and strategies for implementation; advice to organisations and governments on mainstreaming gender for instance, in Namibia and Ethiopia, examining womens programmes within the trade union movement for the Commonwealth Trade Union Council and action research to identify problem areas and devise plans for implementation of equality policies. Consultancy in China includes evaluation of a workers rights project; training and consultancy for the All China Womens Federation on how to establish rights information and advice services and consultancy on advocating for girls education.
