Supporting democracy, civil organisation and human rights
The Active Learning Centre was founded 16 years ago to teach and research in support of democracy, civil organisation and human rights. Since 1993 we have worked with parliamentarians, councillors and election candidates in more than a dozen countries, to encourage better representation. Democracy is maintained by community organisation and expression and we have worked with hundreds of organisations to provide a voice for vulnerable groups and brought almost one hundred post-graduates to the University of Glasgow to observe and reflect on the relationship between people and government. However poor people are, rights and opportunities can improve lives. We have trained hundreds of volunteers to give rights education in Africa, China and the Middle East. Women’s rights are our priority because women are the most vulnerable and active in demanding an end to violence and discrimination.
